Yeah, that was definitely a bad call.

It's just a pity to see such a superbly defended match being decided upon by the referee. Australia certainly did a great job. They were ranked 42nd in the world going into the competition. To make it this far against great teams like Brazil and Italy, and then be robbed in the dying minutes is for want of a better word: a tragedy.

I am so sorry for those brave australian soccers. Until today I experienced the australian play as one of the most lively and dynamic.
It is a real pitty, that autralia does not have the opportunity to play on.

Nearly nobody in Germany and Europe expected Australian soccer to be competitionable with all the other "big" soccer-nations.
Your Boys proved the world - you are nearly on the same level as many of the old favorits.
Today - Australia made the game and played in my opinion better than italy.
Finally - it was bad luck to recieve a penalty in the last 10 seconds.
Do not be too unhappy - Australia was great ! The soccers were great, the autralian travellers and fans are great - celebrating on the streets and pubs and the success - entering the round of 16 is also great - as no one expected autralia to.

I really hope to see your team in Southafrica in 2010 !

The referees have been shite this world cup. An absolute disgrace. No one needs these morons affecting the results of great matches. Soccer is going to get a huge kick in the guts here after that decision. People are not going to put up with shit like that, we'll all go back to AFL and rugby where the refs/umpires are not great but they are 50 times better than the shite that FIFA comes up with.

Australia should be proud of themselves to get as far as they have, and played with as much spirit and skill as they did.
Italians should be ashamed that they were awarded a win in a game they didnt deserve to. If Italians are good at one thing, its taking a dive. No honour.
Just like when the Australian troops approached them in WW2, the Italians packed there undies full of shit and turned tail. No honour.

The umpiring throughout this whole World Cup has been appalling. It would be interesting to see the before and after bank balances of some of the umpires. In many games (not just the Socceroo matches) the questionable decisions have been so blatant, it's fairly obvious that something isn't right. All umpires who gave bad decisions that cost games should be investigated. Bring in a video umpire!

football is not a fair sport because of a fucking referee running around dictating the game. And that's why im not gonna watch this stupid game again. I think australia just have to get over it, coz there are lots of bad decisions made my the freakin unfair referees in the previous games which affected the outcome of the world cup.

I can see every match, there sure are at least 2 or 3 unfair decisions made by the referees. Soccer has never been a major sport in Australia; this world cup stirred an enthusiasm in the sport never seen in Australia before. From a nation whose sporting ability is known in sports such as cricket, rugby union and swimming; the World Cup potentially could have initiated the next �big thing� in Australian sport.

However, after all the hype, enjoyment and excitement, then to have it all fall apart from a bad refereeing decision is pretty darn disappointing. There were many fouls the referee missed both against Australia and Italy; but to make such a bad call in the most critical phase of the game is unacceptable.

We shall never know how the match should have panned out. For all we know Italy could have won it in extra time, but the fact they were handed the match in false pretenses is nothing short of disgusting.

All in all, I seriously think any referee that makes a bad call that alters the outcome of a game should be accountable for his actions to a FIFA incident investigation board.

Many people are saying Italy beat Australia today because of a bad referee call. But remember, in the 2002 World Cup Italy were victims of the worst refereeing ever at a World Cup (Italy had 5 perfectly good goals called off in 3 straight games, and Francesco Totti was given the most outrageously ridiculous Red Card I have ever seen in my life). So perhaps it's fair that after Italy's had so many bad calls go against them, they finally get 1 bad call that goes for them. I mean, Italy had 6 really bad calls go against them in the last World Cup, and just 1 bad call go for them in this World Cup. And admit it, replays prove the Red Card that Marco Materazzi received today was not deserved, so it isn't like today's referee blatantly favored Italy. Who knows what Italy would have done in the second half if Materazzi wasn't sent off and Italy didn't have to play a man down?

Now Guus Hiddink is telling the media that he & Australia lost only because of a bad referee, and they're the poor victims of a bad call. But 4 years ago when Hiddink & South Korea won against Italy because of bad referee calls, he denied that the referee had made any mistakes, and said his team's victory was completely fair. Also, when Hiddink & South Korea beat Spain in the Quarter-Final only because of bad referee calls, Hiddink again denied there were any bad calls by the referee, claiming his team's victory was fair.

Australia have been the victims of some bad refereeing all the way through this world cup. Though you say Italy have had some bad calls against, thus they deserve bad calls to go for them. Thats not how world class soccer matches should be approached. Means need to be created in which games can be fairer! Like refereeing becoming a fulltime occupation, or going to video refereeing for big decisions such as cards/penalties etc. Its so sad to see a team (not only Australia) be short changed of their potential because of a referees lack of fair judgement(and though sometimes the referee can't see things that video referee can). When will FIFA come to their senses and work to fix this problem. It's been a major issue in this world cup, and I'm sure there will be improvements in the next.

All this aside, Australia have done us proud, and finally earnt their place on the world stage of football with the greatest. I'm sure many across the world will realise that our elimination in that match was the result of bad refereeing, and know we will now be a force to reckon with come 2010.

In the end it wasn't the penalty that beat Australia, it was the problems the team has had with striking for unpteen years. If we had put away some chances instead of shooting directly at their goalie, the penalty wouldn't have carried the same weight.

We had our chances but the Italians defended stoutly and with great technique and our strikers, in the absence of Harry, couldn't quite manage it.

Whatever, we played the best football I've seen from Aussie teams - well organised, skilful and entertaining. I'm really pleased with the way we played.

Still ... we did cop some terrible decisions, as have some other teams. Perhaps it's time for the game to move into the 21st century with video replays for penalty kicks? The standard refereeing in the World Cup brings this cartoon to mind:

Think your all missing the point. Australia deserved to win! they played fantastic and if they continue to perform like that they will have many more fantastic international performances. I support England and i hate it when we loose(moments of major despair). But that is football this is what makes it the best sport on earth. Italy have been knocked out of the last 4 world cups. 3 on penalty shootouts and one to a golden goal of which they didn't deserve to. But thats the game one nation will win. Billions of people will be disappointed. My heart yearns for england to win the world cup my head tells me no chance. We have some of the best players in the world but cannot play as a team. that is so frustrationg but this is why i love the game so

The truth is that it was a penalty, but you don't call a penalty like that in the box, especially at that point in the game. It should have gone to overtime, but oh well. You made your country proud for sure.
Also, now you know how the US felt in 2002 with the game against Germany! Should of gone to shootouts damnit!!! lol

The defender screwed up -- he should not have hit the ground. This is why the foul was called. They had to decide if jumping over the defender who didn't get the ball was impeding the forward's play, and it was. I didn't look like the forward would score because he popped the ball too far forward, and as soon as he noticed the other Australian defender coming, he decided to try to sell the foul instead of going for the ball. If the Australian hadn't been on the ground, there would not have been a foul. Now, that being said, it did suck that the ref called this foul at the end of regulation in a 0-0 tie -- neither team deserved to win or lose based on THIS call. You can't give a goal to a team after 90 minutes of "nil" because he had to jump over a defender. If it was a take-out, yes, call it. If he had not called the foul, I don't think Italy would've been complaining much about it anyway -- it would've gone into overtime and would've been decided fair and square. You would not be able to go back and point to a refs decision as the deciding factor. Now you have to, and always will --- but of course, this has been the nature of 1/2 the World Cup games to this point. I've found myself bored watching from all the B.S. flops and horrible calls, and I LOVE FOOSEBALL!

I just wanted to say, as an italian, that we were lucky to get that penalty kick (very dubious indeed...), but maybe you socceroos are forgetting about another major mistake made by the referee, that is the sending out of Materazzi for a fault that deserved the yellow card and not the red one...

Before than Italy had many chances to score and after that Australia didnt do anything impressing at all, up one man they didnt even shot once on goal...

We were lucky but we stood ur ground, Australians had no chances and it takes more than that to go through the quarter finals...

For those idiots who have only insults for us I can just tell them to go and eat their cangoroos meat and hope for the better next time... Cool

If Australia were to beat Italy (very unlikely), France would have won the worldcup.
