Zidane deserved to be sent off. There's no questions about it. But let's see..italians just can't win anything without contraversy. There was some nasty words said by Materazzi,I have no doubt. Why would you say nasty things to a guy, who's playing last game and who deserves your respect as collegue and player who did a lot to improve game overal. You're playing that ggame too,and getting overpaid by playing like thug(I respected always Cannavaro and Nesta, but Materazzi remainds me of Gentile) I presume.Zidane was called classless here, but I wouldn't call Mterazzi's behaviour as class act too.Trying to provoke somebody, imo,is the same cheating as diving and should punished in the same way. Sad for Zizou,he deserved better(as also France),but he should take blame too. A video of Materazzi, the dirtiest player in the game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HblsV-urHg&search=materazzi Zidane made a huge mistake. Its clearly a red, but just as clearly Materazzi was baiting him, Zidane intially walked away and Materazzi kept up the trash talk. Then when Zidane head butted him in the chest, without stepping into him, Materazzi went down like he was shot and stayed down, while play went to the opposite end of the field, a clear dive. Materazzi got was he was looking for, he got Zidane sent off. Some will call it gamesmanship, but we don't need that kind of gamesmanship in any sport at any level. Contrast Materazzi behavior with Henry staying on his feet in the box in the first couple of minutes of the second half, when he could have gone down and probably earned a pk. Materazzi behavior was cynical and clearly not in the spirit of fair play. Apparently, there are many, many things that will drop Italian players to the floor. -headbutts -running past them too fast. -stepping on thier shadows. -playing actuall soccer against them and the list goes on and on.
