Materazzi given a two match ban Quote | Reply

If FIFA made the choice to ban Materazzi for insulting Zidane, fair enough. But that means from here on they MUST start banning a player each and every time an insult is said on the field - which will seriously change the face of the game as we know it. If FIFA does not remain consistent about punishing a player every time an insult is said, that will back up the "people are biased against Italians" theory discussed here

FIFA (and a lot of the world) just doesn't like Italians. It's really messed up.

“It’s scandalous to ban a player just for saying something. It’s the first time that it’s happened and it’s only because Materazzi is Italian and they want to justify the action of a great champion who made a mistake.”
-Paolo Maldini

Zidane has now admitted he was lying when he claimed Materazzi said something racist. But Zidane still insists Materazzi said something bad about his mother and sister. Materazzi denies saying anything about Zidane' mother, but admits he said something about Zidane's sister.

I can't help but wonder how all of this would have played out if Materazzi headed butted Zidane after something he said.

Anyone?????

Obviously not. FIFA just likes Zidane because of his past, and doesn't like Italians. FIFA wants to make it appear Zidane was a lot more justified in his disgraceful behavior than he actually was. And FIFA is doing their best to make it appear that way by giving Zidane a much smaller punishment than he deserves, and giving Materazzi a punishment when he does not deserve one at all.

It's common knowledge that multiple insults are said on the field between players in every professional soccer game in history. Almost never is behavior seen like that of Zidane's in the 2006 World Cup final.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Zidane received for his headbutt the equivalent punishment from FIFA of what De Rossi received for his elbow against the USA..... Is FIFA trying to tell people Zidane's headbutt was no worse than De Rossi's elbow?
Zidane's headbutt was clearly the most classless act of the tournament, and it's really messed up that FIFA is trying to deny that.

Zidane's retired anyway..there's no point for FIFA to ban him.

Actually DeRossi got a 4 game suspension. Zidane only got 3 games. So FIFA is saying that DeRossi's elbo is worse than Zidane's headbutt.

I'm of Italian origin and a big soccer fan, but when DeRossi elbowed the American I thought it was disgusting and he deserved every game he got. And when Totti spit on the Danish player in 2004 I thought they should have sent Totti home. These sentiments were felt by alot of Italian fans. In no way did Italians support DeRossi or Totti or treat them like heros.

Yet...Zidane is being treated like a hero for what he has done.
