I must admit Claudio Vigorelli (Materazzi's agent) has a point. FIFA must remain consistent with their punishments, and verbal insults between players are said all the time... So if FIFA does start banning players for verbal insults, we should expect to see games in the near future when entire rosters are banned.

Now there's reports suggesting Materazzi will face a two match ban. If FIFA goes through with this, they'll need to remain consistent - and that means from here on they'll need to ban a player EVERY time a verbal insult is said on the field... That would seriously change the game as we know it.

Yes, verbal insults are said on the field all the time between soccer players. But the type of behavior Zidane showed in the 2006 Final is almost never seen in a professional soccer game.

FIFA should not ban Materazzi for something they wouldn't ordinarily punish a player for, just because Zidane is Zidane.

Zidane claims Materazzi said something bad about his mother, sister, and Muslim background. Materazzi says that's not true.... So why would one automatically believe Zidane, and not believe Materazzi? You need (or at least should need) evidence of the crime before banning a player.

I called FIFA...they decided to just break Materazzi's toes one by one until he admits guilt. I thought that was a fantastic idea. Everyone knows he's a scummy bag. Always likes to start trash.

Ok, on a more serious note. I think pursuing an inquiry into what one player said to another is basically "hearsay". Making a definative conclusion very difficult, and it would set a hell of a precedent.

Final note, just because insults are thrown around on the pitch though does not mean it is part of the game. If FiFA can manage to tackle this issues (especially since the claim of insult is pretty serious) and act consistently on it along with punishing divers too, it could make football a much better game to watch. Preventing divers is where I think emphasis should be though. Divers more than anything ruin the game!
