Before this World Cup, I heard many critics referring to Italy as a "fading giant." (Meaning Italy is a team that once was one of the best in the world, but clearly no longer is).
Now this final between Italy and France really could have gone either way. I'm glad the team I favor won, but I must admit they did not dominate the match. I don't think it's truly 100% clear if Italy are the best team in the world. They might be. France also might be. And Brazil might be. I don't know.
However, I do think it's now 100% clear that calling Italy a "fading giant" is plain old wrong. If Italy is not the best in the world, they are certainly among the best in the world. I have no doubt about that.
