Argentine referee openly favoured Portugal Quote | Reply

Not that this wasn't obvious to all and sundry anyway...

Argentine referee openly favours Portugal before the match
While refs can openly favour certain teams at the World Cup, a stadium announcer encouraging home supporters is just too much for FIFA, the experienced Andreas Wenzel substituted during Germany's quarter-final win over Argentina on Friday for urging the Berlin support to get behind their team.

"This had no place in the balanced neutrality of an announcer," Markus Siegler, a spokesman for world soccer's governing body, said of Wenzel's comments.

"It's not acceptable."

Interesting. Especially given Horacio Elizondo's comments ahead of England's quarter-final against Portugal on Saturday.

The Argentinian referee admitted he preferred Portugal's "more technical" style of play to England's use of "high balls" and that he would be watching England carefully for fouls when the ball is in the air.

Elizondo escaped censure and referees the match today.

If you don't know much about football (yes football, this is what is really called and not soccer my friend...), please stop writing stupid posts about refs and so on.... England went out because they were just not good enough and I'll stop there, since I could say much worst about their usesless team. Rooney is well known for his attitude and he is always a candidate for a red card, he's talented but very stupid... period!
And Portugal was not even that great team... France is going to make an omelette of them...

The chap's bias against England is self-professed and a matter of record. The post is completely factual.

Well, if they were so disorganized and unmotivated as to pose no significant threat this World Cup, why couldn't Portugal beat them on their own merits, fair & square? But this is beside the point.

So, Rooney received a red-card "just because he deserved one" 'eh?

C.Ronaldo is "well known" for being a rotten boned lying, faking, melodramatic, gay rapist cur, but I don't see him being red-carded "just because"

Anyway, the point of this post is that what on EARTH where FIFA thinking in placing Horacio Elizondes in charge of this match? A Referee who made his name (so to speak) by red-carding principle English players, and who before the match expressed his preference for Portugal.

Indeed, it was so OBVIOUS that the Ref was likely to play a factor in the match that several Newspapers actually ran articles warning of it.

And Lo and behold...
