Are French players justified in blaming Materazzi for Zidane's Red Card?

"When I see this, I want to smash his face," France defender William Gallas said.
"He (Zidane) can leave with his head held high. The other one (Materazzi), even if he has won the cup, cannot. Because there is more to life than soccer," Trezeguet said.
I'm unclear what Gallas and Trezeguet are talking about.... I mean, obviously I have no idea what was said between Materazzi and Zidane. But nothing that can be said verbally can justify a physical attack. No matter what Materazzi said to Zidane, a red card was still deserved for Zidane's action.
